Brad and Lucy bought a cherry orchard in Penticton, B.C. Brad ran a drywall company for many years but, like many at his age, reached a point of mid-life crisis, “what am I going to do with my life?” And Lucy felt much the same.
They owned a nice house in the BC Fraser Valley, kids moved on. What were they to do? They searched for ideas of where to live and how to spend their new found time, they wanted to do something different. After much searching for the right opportunity, they came upon a cherry orchard for sale in the Okanagan, fruit country in BC. Now it's not every day that city dwellers move to small town farming country to live, but they wanted a change. So Brad and Lucy took the plunge, took the risk, bought the orchard.
Now managing a cherry orchard is not an easy job, nor is it the same life as they had in the burbs of the Fraser Valley. But sometimes you just have to go for it, and they did. And Brad and Lucy are loving it!
Writing a book on helicopter parenting is my "Cherry Orchard". I needed to find something to satisfy my mid-life crisis. I have been puttering for the past few years after shutting down one of my businesses. I was tired of the fight to reach the top. After being an entrepreneur with all of its ups and downs, I just needed a change. Writing has been the best thing for me and the health of my relationship with my family. When you get up every morning wanting to start right away on a project that you are passionate about, it is a great feeling. Even more so when you can put checks against those "to do lists" with pride and certainty.
If you are at the stage in your life where your kids are or are about to leave the nest, start thinking about finding your Cherry Orchard. You will be glad you did.
